Be a vehicle for life-saving road safety education

Schools can gear up for a comprehensive suite of road safety education initiatives, lesson plans and excursion and incursion opportunities across Victoria through the new Road Safety Education Victoria (RSEV) website. 

RSEV is a collaboration between the Transport Accident Commission, Department of Transport and Planning, Public Transport Victoria and Victoria Police. The partnership provides free, evidence-based road-safety education programs and resources for students across all learning stages, to help ensure every trip for children and young people is a safe one.

Road safety is an important issue in all school communities, as an alarming number of children and young people continue to be hurt and killed on our roads.

A taste of what’s on offer

See below for a list of the programs and support on offer.

Road Smart Interactive

The recently launched Road Smart Interactive is a free road-safety education incursion program for years 9, 10, 11 and VCE Vocational Major (VM) students. 

The facilitated incursions use immersive technology to help students understand the role they play in eliminating road trauma. 

Students will work through 6 interactive digital experiences exploring road safety and prompting them to reflect on road safety issues affecting them and their school community.

Road to Zero at Melbourne Museum

Road to Zero is a world-first road safety education centre providing years 9, 10 and VCE VM students with an engaging, personalised and free learning experience at Melbourne Museum. 

 A visit to Road to Zero takes approximately 2 hours and has 2 parts: 

• an immersive and exploratory exhibition showcasing the latest in multi-sensory interactive technologies 
• curriculum-linked programs in the purpose-built Learning Studio.

Bike Ed

The Bike Ed program gives children and adults the opportunity to learn about safe riding behaviours and road rules. 

The program integrates with the Victorian curriculum and uses practical lessons to help all riders to ride safely and for older students, supports safer independent riding. 

Bike Ed is a popular activity in the department’s Active Schools program, which supports schools to get students physically active.

Road Safety Good Practice Policy Guide

This tool can help inform the development of policy and practice for staff, students and families and influence a culture of safety. It sets out clear actions for schools and provides recommendations for addressing road safety education as a whole-school approach.

Road Safety School Engagement Officers

School Engagement Officers are free and are here to help your school tailor its approach to road safety for your individual environment. They can assist with: 

• accessing road safety programs and community grants 
• delivering and embedding a whole-school approach to road safety 
• school policy development 
• professional learning and development opportunities.
