Academy Movement Pre-Academy Program

The Academy Movement Pre‑Academy Program uses sport to strengthen routines, respect, and learning behaviours that set students up for success at school.

Program provider: Academy Movement

Academy Movement partners with secondary schools to design and establish sustainable long-term, curriculum aligned sport academies that improve student engagement, behaviour and pathways through an education first approach.

Program description

The Academy Movement Pre-Academy Program is for secondary schools that already run an Academy Movement program or are planning to start one soon.

It is an early support program for younger secondary students. The aim is to build good routines, positive learning behaviours, and stronger connection to school.

The program runs as one 60-minute session each week, with 8 sessions per term. Sessions include:

  • practical sport sessions (for example Rugby Union, Basketball, Cricket, AFL, Golf, or strength and conditioning)
  • mentoring focused on respect, effort, and positive behaviour
  • goal setting and habit building through a performance journal
  • a session on pathways and careers linked to sport

Academy Movement staff work with school leaders and teachers during the term to track student progress and readiness for future Academy involvement.

Sessions are delivered by Academy Movement coaches, including elite athletes and past Academy Movement participants. They act as positive role models and support students to bring strong habits into school and the classroom.

This is an education-first program. Sport is used to support learning, routines and behaviour. Each session includes mentoring and a simple journal to help students set goals, reflect, and build positive habits. The program also helps schools prepare students for future participation in their Academy Movement program.
