Program provider: L2R Dance
L2R is Australia’s only not-for-profit organisation focused on hip hop and street dance for young people.
They provide free dance programs, leadership opportunities and pathways to employment. Since 2009, we have used dance to support young people’s wellbeing, physical health and confidence.
Their focus on hip hop and street dance gives young people a creative space where they can express themselves, build skills and explore important social and cultural issues.
Their vision is a more inclusive world where everyone can benefit from access to the arts.
Program description
Fam Jam is a one-off performance and large-scale workshop event. It is designed as a fun, high-energy group experience for a larger audience.
Fam Jam is a space where young people from historically marginalised communities have a sense of ownership over creative practice.
The program includes:
- a 10-minute interactive performance by 6 L2R dancers
- a 20-minute large-group workshop where students learn basic hip hop moves
- a short dance routine
- a celebratory cypher (a freestyle dance circle often used in hip hop).
Fam Jam gives students a chance to take part in dance in a fun and inclusive way.
The program also provides peer mentorship from L2R’s artists. All workshops are led by culturally diverse artists who reflect the lived experience of many students and communities.
Fam Jam can also act as a first step into L2R’s other free dance programs, helping students build longer-term connection to positive activities, role models and community.
