Program description
The LOOKOUT Designated Teacher training helps strengthen school staffs' understanding of the Out-of-Home Care Education Commitment (DOCX, 778KB) and a school’s obligations in supporting the wellbeing of students in statutory out-of-home care (OoHC).
This training helps participants understand the role of the Designated Teacher, the experiences and needs of students in OoHC, how to navigate the care service system and the supports available to them in undertaking their role as Designated Teacher.
This training is offered by LOOKOUT Centres statewide. It can be offered online or in person and takes approximately 6 hours to complete.
Participants will gain an understanding of:
- the role of LOOKOUT Centres
- the experience of students in OoHC
- the role of the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing and the care services system
- the impact of trauma on students
- the responsibilities for schools under the Out-of-Home Care Education Commitment
- cultural inclusion
- the role of the Designated Teacher.
Intended outcomes
- Increased educator understanding and implementation of the role of a Designated Teacher
- Increased capability to ensure that the workforces within the school are appropriately supporting the wellbeing of students living in OoHC, that they understand the experiences and specific needs of this cohort and that they ensure individual education plans are trauma informed.

Implementation considerations
Courses take approximately 6 hours to complete. Designated Teachers in primary, secondary and specialist schools are permitted to attend this training.

- Detailed cost: Backfilling may be required for staff to participate in professional learning.
How the Fund can be used
Time release for staff, including casual relief teaching (CRT).
