Looking at play-based learning in Mount Dandenong

Teacher: OK, everyone. Remember how we've been learning about 3D and 2D shapes in the last couple of weeks? Well, some of you... Whoops [laughs], when we did this activity last, did you make any of these? Was this your work?

Student: No.

Teacher: Do you remember that some of the other children in the other group built these and I took the photos. You can have a go at building them yourself or you can make some of your own and I can take some photos of yours.

Student: This is mine.

Teacher: Oh, that's your one. Do this one. Are you going to try yours again today or a different one?

Student: That's mine.

Teacher: What shapes can you see on here?

Student: It's actually mine.

Teacher: Oh, it's yours, is it? What's this one?

Student: A cylinder.

Teacher: A cylinder. Wow, excellent. So if I was to draw this on, have you had a go at drawing it as well?

Student: Yes.

Teacher: Because you guys can build them or you can actually have a turn at drawing them as well. You can draw them like this or I can take a photo of them as well. What shapes can you see on yours?

Student: A triangle.

Teacher: Yeah. Where's the triangle? Point to the triangle for me.

Student: Will you take my picture too?

Teacher: Sure bud.

Student: And the rectangle there and there and there.

Teacher: Yeah. Good job. And what are these ones with the four sides that are all the same?

Student: Square there.

Teacher: Yep.

Student: I can see it clearly bending a little bit.

Teacher: Alright. So stop. What do you think she should do if it looks like it's bending? What can you suggest doing to stop it tipping? You got some ideas? What do you think? What could, what does she need to do to stop it from tipping?

Student: She might need to flatten it out.

Teacher: Flatten it out? What do you mean by that? Can you tell me a bit more?

Student: I know, I know. Like so to make it simple. The bottom block is leaning that way. So, it's leaning that way.

Teacher: You can help out mate. Come and show us over here.

Student: Was it like this way. See?

Teacher: Ah it's a bit, see what he's saying? It's too far across. You need to put it into the middle.

Student: Oh.

Teacher: Oh no! I'm loving that you guys are just thinking it's a bit funny and we'll have another go, because that's what we can do with these blocks. Have a go. Build it up again. Can you remember what it was like?

Student: Maybe.

Teacher: Maybe.
