Program description

A student's experiences of trauma can profoundly impact their ability to learn, connect and thrive.

Phoenix Australia's Trauma-Informed Practice in Schools program equips primary and secondary school staff with practical strategies to support trauma-impacted students, helping to reduce the adverse effects on their mental health, wellbeing and learning.

This evidence-informed, self-paced online course provides tools for recognising trauma’s impacts and responding with sensitivity and awareness. Participants explore how these strategies can be adapted to different school settings and learn approaches to self-care that support their own wellbeing.

The program includes 5 short modules that take about 1.5 hours to complete. It may also be delivered as a 2-hour face-to-face workshop. Modules cover:

  • principles of trauma informed care
  • how to be culturally responsive
  • how to build safety and trust
  • how to safely talk to and stabilise someone in distress
  • other strategies for aiding recovery and building resilience.

Intended outcomes

  • Describe the key concepts and practices of trauma-informed approaches in schools
  • Recognise how trauma affects students’ mental health, behaviour, and ability to learn
  • Apply practical strategies to support students who have experienced trauma
  • Practice simple self-care techniques to manage your own wellbeing

Implementation considerations

  • Target population: Primary and secondary school teachers.
  • Program adaptability: The course includes case scenarios depicting typical school situations to illustrate application of the recommended strategies. These can be further customised as required. The program is adaptable for out-of-home care students.
  • Staffing: The program is online and self-paced so there are no backfilling requirements. The Menu provider and its personnel must not be alone with any school student or group of school students in the classroom or in any other place at the school’s premises without another educator, teacher or teacher’s aide present at all times.
  • Training requirements: The course can be completed on desktop computers, laptops or any mobile device such as mobile phones or iPads.
  • Factors to consider: The 5 online, self-paced modules take approximately 1.5 hours to complete. There is no minimum or maximum number of participants required for the online delivery mode.
  • Australian context: The program has been developed and applied in Australia. The current version of this course has been derived from our Trauma Informed Care program, which has been through several iterations in recent years. It has been evaluated and achieves high ratings by course participants.
