Storm Waka Hang Out

Storm Waka Hang Out is a 6‑week after‑school program that supports Pasifika and other young people to stay connected through sport, creative activities, and cultural learning.

Program provider: Melbourne Storm

Melbourne Storm is one of the most popular and successful sporting teams in the country. They are the only rugby league club in Victoria that plays in the NRL, representing communities across the entire state.

Storm has developed a Community Strategy that delivers programs for three key community groups: First Nations, Māori & Pasifika and All Abilities.

Program description

The Storm Waka Hang Out program is an after-school program for young people who may be at risk of becoming disconnected from school or community.

It is designed mainly for young Pasifika students, but it can be adapted for other young people who need extra support.

The program gives students a safe and structured place to go after school. This is a time when some young people may be more likely to become involved in unsafe or antisocial behaviour.

The program runs for 2 hours each week over 6 weeks. It is delivered at a local council or school venue.

Activities may include:

  • sport, art and other physical activities
  • workshops on identity, confidence and personal growth
  • information about local youth services and support programs
  • guest speakers from community groups and sporting organisations

The program is based on the Storm Waka values of connection, culture, communication, leadership and respect.

Melbourne Storm works with local councils, schools, community groups, youth services and police to plan and deliver the program. This helps connect young people to positive support in their local area.
