The Trauma Consultancy Service helps schools support students affected by trauma by offering tailored coaching and assistance.

Program description

The Trauma Consultancy Service helps school staff understand students with challenging behaviour affected by trauma.

Schools will work in partnership with a Trauma consultant who will assist in identifying classrooms most in need of welfare focused coaching and support. The service supports school staff to:

  • understand and work with children whose lives are affected by trauma
  • provide safe and supportive learning environments for students affected by trauma
  • develop teacher’s interactions with traumatised children
  • establish strategies for traumatised children to develop connection and resolve conflict
  • provide a safe space for teachers to debrief difficult interactions with children or parents.

Intended outcomes

  • Educators have an increased understanding of childhood development, trauma and attachment
  • Educators have an increased understanding of managing complex behaviours
  • Children have an increased sense of safety, confidence to seek out educator and ability to engage in appropriate play

Implementation considerations

  • Target population: School educators.
  • Program adaptability: A needs assessment is undertaken with the school to ensure that the program is tailored and appropriate for the context.
  • Staffing: A Trauma Consultancy Service consultant works with up to 20 staff in small groups.
  • Training requirements: No prerequisites. The time commitment is as follows: Planning: one 4 hour planning session with school leadership, Training: 8 x 2.5 hours, Follow up reflective practice sessions: 8 x 1.5 hours, Follow up case consultation and support: 8 x 1.5 hours and Planning and follow up sessions: 2 hours.
