Program description

The Orygen Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) training package equips secondary school staff with skills and knowledge to implement trauma-informed care. It aims to help schools develop an action plan to integrate trauma-informed principles and practices, creating a trauma-informed environment.

The program provides a shared understanding of the impacts of trauma on young people and supports schools in responding consistently and safely to those who have experienced trauma. The TIC package focuses on sustainable culture change, enabling schools to adopt a whole-school approach to supporting young people and staff impacted by trauma.

Intended outcomes

  • Improved knowledge of the impact of trauma experiences on students' development
  • Improved knowledge of trauma-informed care principles
  • Improved ability to recognise common signs and symptoms of trauma in students and staff
  • Improved overall wellbeing of students and staff through applying knowledge of trauma to respond effectively, resist re-traumatisation, and promote self-care strategies
  • School culture that promotes and protects the wellbeing of students and staff by developing a school-wide action plan for applying trauma-informed care principles and practices
  • Improved staff ability to demonstrate and model positive self-care and appropriate help seeking behaviours

Implementation considerations

  • Target population: All staff working within secondary schools, including teachers, school leadership, wellbeing and support staff.
  • Program adaptability: TIC is designed to be adapted to the local context. School 'champions' work to develop the TIC action plan following the training. The program is adaptable for out-of-home care students.
  • Staffing: School staff are required to attend a full day training delivered face-to-face or online by 2 x mental health clinical consultant facilitators with experience working in youth mental health. School staff identified as champions will need to be covered by others while attending a minimum of 3 one-hour online 'champion' sessions. However, these times can be flexible around staff availability, minimising the need for backfill. The Menu provider and its personnel must not be alone with any school student or group of school students in the classroom or in any other place at the school’s premises without another educator, teacher or teacher’s aide present at all times.
  • Training requirements: IT resources, including hardware and internet access are needed for both face-to-face training and support sessions. The training can be undertaken in 2 different formats:
    • Full-day face-to-face training sessions plus 3 online champion sessions to support TIC implementation (with a select group of 'champion' staff), or
    • 2 x half-day training sessions, online or face-to-face plus 3 online champion sessions to support TIC implementation (with a select group of 'champion' staff).
  • Factors to consider: The minimum number of participants is 10 and the maximum number of participants is 40, but the program can be repeated to make sure everyone identified is able to take part.
  • Australian context: The program has been developed and applied in Australia.
