The department is encouraging secondary teachers to share information with their students about the Young Carers Scholarship program, for young people with carer responsibilities.

Scholarships of up to $500 are open to secondary school students who live or go to school in Victoria and provide care and support to a family member with a disability, mental illness, chronic health issue or an older person with care needs.

The funding can be used for activities focused on education or skills, such as school trips and club memberships or to pay for education expenses.

On average, there is one young carer in every classroom. Their caring responsibilities can create barriers that impact on their engagement in education as well as their social and emotional wellbeing.

Schools can support young carers and their families by sharing information on the scholarship and supporting students to apply. Refer to this guidance for advice on identifying and supporting young carers in schools.
