Celebrating 2023 Principals Day

Principals Day, run by the Victorian Principals Association (VPA), recognises the significant impact principals have in schools and their communities. This year, we will celebrate the day on Friday 4 August 2023, giving school communities an opportunity to show their thanks and appreciation for principals’ hard work. Schools in Victoria have celebrated this day for more than 20 years.

‘Over the past few years, we have seen our school communities look more and more towards our principals and assistant principals for calm and considered leadership, along with clear communication during uncertain times. The passion our leaders have for their students, staff and communities is outstanding and should be celebrated by all,’ says Andrew Dalgleish, VPA President.

Matthew Borg, principal of Keilor Views Primary School, says Principals Day is a time when the whole community celebrates the role of principals and shows their gratitude.

‘I pay homage on the day to all the principals who mentored and supported me to be the human (and principal) I am to this day,’ Matthew adds.

How to celebrate

To get involved in the celebrations, schools can:

  • host an event, such as a staff breakfast
  • have students write their principal letters of appreciation
  • download posters and social media tiles.

You can also share Principals Day celebration images on your school’s social media channels, using the hashtag #PrincipalsDay.
