Language Assistants Program 2024

If you’d like to engage a language assistant at your school in 2024, please submit an expression of interest through the Language Assistants Program (LAP) by Friday 11 August 2023.

The LAP places local and overseas native speakers in selected clusters of Victorian government schools for 3 terms (terms 2, 3 and 4). Assistants can enrich language education by supporting school language teachers with development and delivery of language programs.

The LAP will offer language assistants to support programs in any language.

Language assistants in the classroom

Language assistants support school language teachers to develop and deliver language programs.

By sharing knowledge of their native language and culture, the assistants help students to develop their fluency and confidence in the language, while also promoting greater cultural and linguistic awareness across the school community.

The program is funded through the Student Resource Package. Language assistants must work a minimum of 7.6 hours a day, 4 days a week.

For more information about the roles and responsibilities of language assistants in the classroom, refer to the LAP guidelines.

How to apply

To take part in the LAP, please complete an expression of interest form (DOCX) by Friday 11 August 2023.

The form includes an extended response section for schools to outline their plan on how the language assistant will enrich their program, and how the school will support them.

Language teachers interested in engaging a language assistant through the LAP should speak to their principal.

Schools will be notified of the outcome of their application on Monday 4 September 2023. Language assistants will start their placement at the start of Term 2 on Monday 15 April 2024.
