Maths gets a move on in new Active Schools workshop

Mathematics and movement are ‘dancing’ together in a new professional development opportunity for teachers to create an active learning environment to empower students.

On Monday 6 September 2023, an innovative 3-session workshop aims to ignite classrooms with the dynamic relationship between maths and movement, with support from the Australian Ballet!

In the day’s second session, the Australian Ballet will present a 2-hour session – Exploring Math through Movement – that brings a fresh perspective to getting maths students active in the classroom. The session will be a highlight of the event, which will explore how students can thrive through the integration of maths and movement.

The day’s 3 sessions will be presented in a partnership between the Mathematical Association of Victoria and the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER) Victoria.

ACHPER’S Active Schools Expert Support Service helps schools to use the Active Schools framework to support all Victorian students to develop the skills, confidence and motivation to be active in life.

Unleashing the power of movement and numbers

The Unleashing the power of movement and numbers workshops centre on the Active Schools key priority area of Active Classrooms through the lens of mathematics.

These 3 sessions will help teachers to discover hands-on approaches to create an active learning environment:

• Session 1: Active Classrooms Unleashed, 10 am to 12 pm
• Session 2: Exploring Math through Movement, 1 pm to 3 pm
• Session 3: Empowering Active Learners, 4 pm to 5:30 pm

You can register to attend a single session or stay for the whole day to support your learning priorities and focus areas.

Please note, the day’s third session will offer the chance to attend online. Teachers may wish to join with their learning team to engage in this session.

• Time: 10 am to 5:30 pm
• Venue: La Trobe Sports Park Pavilion, La Trobe University, Bundoora
• Cost: free, but you must register for catering purposes.

Registrations will be open until the day of the event, though places are limited.
