A new resource is available for teachers who want to bring Indigenous storytelling to life in the classroom.

The Indigenous Literacy Day Classroom Teacher's Guide (PDF, 14MB), developed for students in grades 1 to 6, features renowned children's authors Gregg Dreise and Sally Morgan. Gregg is also one of the 2021 Premier's Reading Challenge authors.

The guide is designed to work within existing literacy-based lesson plans, and help students explore the special relationships Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have with the land, sea, sky and waterways.

Teachers can integrate suggested activities into this year's curriculums to help students learn about Indigenous cultures, languages and histories by helping them to:

  • build knowledge and appreciation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures
  • explore Aboriginal storytelling traditions and collaborating with peers through planning, creating and sharing stories
  • develop language and shared understanding through narrative-driven learning
  • explore connectedness to local community, Country and place.

Kimberlin Education developed the guide in 2020 as part of Australia Post's partnership with the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) to celebrate Indigenous Literacy Day.
