Celebrate reading with Children’s Book Council of Australia Book Week

Download resources, plan activities and discuss authors and illustrators with your class.

From Saturday 20 to Friday 26 August 2022, Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book Week 2022 is a wonderful opportunity to immerse your class in children’s books, reading and illustrations.

Celebrating the week is a chance to transport your class into other worlds and to broaden their minds. The CBCA Book Week theme for 2022 is ‘Dreaming with eyes open’. The theme explores how books can take children on a journey into other people’s lives, into other perspectives and new topics, while also teaching and entertaining readers.

How to get involved

To get into the spirit of the week, you can download free book week resources from CBCA. You can also download web and social media banners, tiles and email signatures. ‘Dreaming with eyes open’ logos are also available for use on your own resources.

You can also get involved by running activities throughout the week; for example, hosting a dress-up day when students come as their favourite book character or creating a visual display with the children in the classroom or library.

Another great way to explore this year’s theme is by sharing stories and illustrations with your class from the many excellent new books on the CBCA Book of the Year 2022 shortlist.

Shortlisted books fall under 6 categories:

  • CBCA Book of the Year: Older Readers
  • CBCA Book of the Year: Younger Readers
  • CBCA Book of the Year: Early Childhood
  • CBCA Picture Book of the Year
  • Eve Pownall Award
  • CBCA Award for New Illustrator.

Winners and honours of the CBCA Book of the Year 2022 Awards will be announced on Friday 19 August 2022 at CBCA Book Week.

Premiers’ Reading Challenge

You can also continue the focus on reading by encouraging your students to join the Premiers’ Reading Challenge, which is open until Friday 2 September 2022.
