Differentiated play-based and inquiry learning

View the latest professional learning to support differentiated play-based and inquiry learning.

A new online module to strengthen teachers' understanding of the role of play and inquiry in children's lives and learning is now available.

The module focusing on play and differentiated learning is the last in a series of four modules released this year, to support differentiated play-based and inquiry learning in the early years of primary school.

Play-based and inquiry learning is the process during play when students inquire using their imagination to explore, experiment, discover, collaborate, improvise and create.

The cognitive processes used by students in play stimulate and integrate a wide range of intellectual, physical, social, emotional and creative capabilities to foster high-level learning.

Teachers can register for, access and complete the latest module, and the three previously released, for free and at a time that suits them.

More on the professional learning program

Delivered by the Department in partnership with Deakin University's School of Education, the program's four modules aim to optimise opportunities for play-based teaching and learning in the early years.

As well as the online modules, the program includes:

  • recorded webinars
  • an online community of practice
  • a resource bank to support implementation of appropriate curriculum design and pedagogical approaches.

Before starting the modules, teachers can view orientation materials including videos and an article exploring how play-based learning can set children up for success at school and beyond.

The latest module focusing on play and differentiated learning follows the release of modules on:

  • understanding play and play-based, inquiry learning approach
  • planning and implementing a play-based, inquiry approach
  • assessing learning through play.

Teachers only need to register once to access all four modules.
