Improving numeracy outcomes

Use resources including flip cards and an animation series to help primary students with their numeracy and mathematics.

We have developed new high-quality teaching and learning resources, which complement the existing evidence-based approaches in the Mathematics Teaching Toolkit, including the Mathematics Curriculum Companion.

Designed in consultation with academics and practitioners, the new resources can be used by schools in line with their school improvement goals.

About the resources

The 3 new resources available for schools are the:

  • Flip Make Play cards, for Foundation students
  • Mathscots animation series, for students in Prep to Grade 2
  • Middle Years Maths Challenges, for students in Grade 5 to Year 9.

We are distributing hard copies of the Flip Make Play cards to government primary schools in Term 4, 2022, with a teaching guide to help you support young learners to develop their understanding of mathematical concepts and language. The teaching guide and cards are also available online.

The Mathscots learning and teaching resource is an engaging 10-part animation series that helps to get children talking about maths at home. An accompanying teaching guide is also available. It provides in-class learning experiences, as well as ideas to build connections between school and home.

The Middle Years Maths Challenges provide additional support to teachers of levels 5 to 9. There are 30 challenges available online to support students in grades 5 and 6. The challenges can run for up to 3 lessons each.
