Upskill to become a qualified mathematics or science teacher

Express your interest in Intake 3 of the Secondary Mathematics and Science Initiative by 8 September 2022.

Out-of-field mathematics and science teachers are encouraged to express their interest for the third intake of the Secondary Mathematics and Science Initiative (SMSI), beginning February 2023.

This is an opportunity for out-of-field mathematics and science teachers in years 7 to 10 to complete a fully funded graduate certificate in mathematics or science, at no cost.

Out-of-field teachers are those who do not specialise in the subject they are teaching.

Deakin University delivers the 2-year graduate certificates. Deakin University is a leading Australian tertiary institution with recognised expertise in out-of-field teaching.

The SMSI provides schools additional funding to support participating teachers.

Expressions of interest

There are 75 places open for the 2023 intake, with 50 places in mathematics and 25 in science, with just over half of all places reserved for rural and regional participants.

Rural and regional participants will receive travel and accommodation subsidies of up to $320 per day to attend face-to-face course delivery days.

To apply for the SMSI, complete an expression of interest by Thursday 8 September 2022.

We will let applicants know the outcome by late September.

SMSI information

The SMSI supports teachers who have been teaching mathematics or science for one to 5 years, without a formal qualification in the method.

Across the 2 years, participants will attend 16 face-to-face intensive-learning days in central Melbourne and participate in after-school virtual workshops.

The course will enhance your skills to provide evidence-based, high-quality learning experiences for students, and you can share your learning with other staff at your school.

You can put credit points from the graduate certificates towards a Master of Education.

Information sessions

To learn more about the SMSI, you and your principals can attend an upcoming online information session.

The sessions will provide you with a deep understanding of course expectations, as well as what participants and their schools will gain by participating.
