Key information
- Applications for semester 2 2026 open 1 April 2026. Apply now.
- Expressions of interest for other semesters open 1 April 2026. Express your interest now.
- The semester 2 2026 program is MEMC 1 (content up to Level 7) and runs in Central Melbourne, Bendigo and Moe.
- MEMC 1 also runs in semesters 1 and 2 2027.
- MEMC 2 (content Level 8 to 10) runs in semesters 1 and 2 2027 and semester 1 2028.
The Department of Education is offering 2 fully funded Mathematics Education Micro Credentials (MEMC) to Years 7 to 10 mathematic teachers in Victorian government schools seeking to strengthen their mathematics teaching practice.
Delivered by Charles Sturt University (CSU), the MEMCs support excellence in teaching and learning by strengthening teachers’ mathematical content and pedagogical knowledge, particularly for out-of-field teachers. Aligned with the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 (VTLM 2.0), the MEMC provide practical support so teachers can do what they do best: teach.
The two semester long micro credentials, MEMC 1 and MEMC 2, complement each other by focusing on different year levels. Teachers may choose to complete one or both credentials.
There is no cost for teachers or their schools, with travel reimbursement available for eligible schools.
Completion of both MEMC provides teachers with a study credit that can be used towards a Master of Education or Master of Inclusive Education.
Eligibility
To be eligible for either of the micro credentials, teachers must:
- be employed as a teacher in a Victorian government secondary school when applying and during completion of the MEMC
- be teaching at least one Years 7 to 10 mathematics class during their participation in the MEMC
- have discussed the opportunity with their principal and have the principal’s endorsement to participate.
Interested teachers should discuss the MEMC with their principal prior to applying. As part of the application, teachers will need to enter their school principal’s email address, so that the MEMC project team can contact them to confirm their support.
About the Mathematics Education Micro Credentials
Overview
The MEMCs provide pathways for effective teaching of the new Victorian Curriculum: Mathematics (VC:M) 2.0 with fidelity to the VTLM 2.0.
Through MEMCs, teachers will:
- strengthen their understanding of how mathematics develops across the curriculum
- plan evidence-based instruction using VC:M 2.0 progressions
- deliver high-impact mathematics lessons aligned to the VTLM 2.0
- leverage multiple representations to deepen student conceptual understanding
- identify misconceptions early and understand how to plan effective interventions
- use key supports, including the Victorian Lesson Plans (VLPs) and VTLM 2.0 practice guides, in their teaching practice.
Teachers build upon their existing understanding of mathematical concepts, skills, procedures, and processes within the VC:M 2.0 strands; Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics and Probability.
The difference between MEMC 1 and MEMC 2
MEMC 1 strengthens understanding of how mathematics develops across VC 2.0 Levels 1-7. Completion will enable teachers to support Year 7 students to successfully transition from primary to secondary level mathematics.
- Semester 2 2026 – applications open
- Semester 1 & 2 2027
MEMC 2 strengthens understanding of how mathematics develops across VC 2.0 Levels 8-10. Completion will support teachers to build student mastery of key concepts, skills, procedures and processes in the secondary years.
- Semester 1 & 2 2027
- Semester 1 2028
Each MEMC can be completed in a single semester. Teachers may choose to complete one or both micro credentials, in any order and in any available semester.
Mode of delivery and time commitment
The MEMC are completed over a single semester. Each MEMC requires a 75-hour time commitment. This time commitment is inclusive of the following components:
- 8 x 7-hour face-to-face days delivered in 2-day blocks: Total – 56 hours. There are 5 locations to choose from around Victoria:
- Melbourne, Bendigo, Moe, Ballarat and Shepparton
- 8 x 1-hour synchronous online sessions, delivered from 4:00pm-5:00pm: Total – 8 hours
- additional reading and assessment requirements: Total – 11 hours.
Accreditation
Charles Sturt University (CSU) are the provider of the MEMC. Any teacher who completes both MEMC 1 and MEMC 2 successfully will receive credit towards a Master of Education or Master of Inclusive Education at CSU. To gain credit, all attendance and assessment requirements must be met.
Further details are available on request, please visit Charles Sturt University.
Costs
The MEMC courses are fully subsidised for teachers in Victorian government secondary schools. There is no cost for teachers or their schools.
Funding
Schools support
Schools will receive 8 days of CRT cover for each participating teacher to support attendance at the 8 face-to-face sessions. This funding will be provided to schools as a reimbursement of expenses through the Schools Targeted Funding Portal.
Travel reimbursement
To support regional and rural participation, teachers whose schools are more than 100 kilometres from the nearest face-to-face location will be reimbursed for travel through the Schools Targeted Funding Portal. Eligible teachers will be able to claim up to $640 per 2-day block for travel, meals, and accommodation costs.
The MEMC project team will notify schools and participating teachers before commencing MEMC if they are eligible for travel reimbursement.
